Corian is used to great effect in this subway station by Karim Rashid
Project: Università subway station, Naples
Designer: Karim Rashid
American designer Karim Rashid is well known for his exuberant style, and his super-expressive design for the Università subway station in Naples makes extensive use of DuPont’s Corian to create a highly patterned interior.
Corian is used as durable cladding for various applications throughout four different levels of the station including the four sculptural black mezzanine columns in Nocturne and a white control centre in thermo-formed and invisibly joined sections of Glacier White. Two columns are smooth and two feature 3D profiles of abstract faces. These monochrome elements are combined with bold floor graphics and Corian walls patterned to Rashid’s designs, making use of two new tones – lime and pink – developed specially for the project. White, glossy Corian is also used to clad a sinuously curved 100m-long connecting corridor.
Rashid’s design for the subway aims to stimulate and inspire the traveller by creating a fresh and exciting space as their journey progresses. Subtle it is not, but no-one could ever accuse it of anonymity.
Digital printing has been used to great effect within the interior design world for some time now, transforming walls, ceilings and windows with colourful graphics and advertising, but until recently the scope for this technology in flooring applications has been limited. Floorink, a revolutionary printed flooring product, is changing all that.
Floorink is an innovative printed vinyl flooring created by design specialists Printed Space – developed in partnership with Forbo Flooring Systems - that presents a dramatic and bespoke opportunity to produce one off flooring designs for interiors. Perfect for any flooring project, whether it be in a residential or commercial environment, you’ll bring a completely new dimension to your space.
This revolutionary concept enables designers to create fun yet functional floor spaces; combining the endless design possibilities of digital printing with a hard wearing contract vinyl product, with all the usual features you’d expect from a Forbo floor, such as a 10 year wear layer guarantee and non-slip properties to make it unique in the market. Floorink is produced in 2 metre and 4 metre widths and lengths of up to 20 metres. The rolls can be joined together with a flawless joint using over-scribe and under-scribe techniques so a seamless design can be created to enrich and fashion a fantastic focal point, whatever the floor size.
Floorink offers unlimited possibilities for specifiers, contractors and designers looking for something different, to create unique and inspiring floor designs using illustrations, high-resolution photography, maps or abstract art. Your own photographs, artwork or branding can be used to create your printed to order vinyl cushion floor, to fit any size floor space.
The extent of concepts and themes now achievable makes it ideal for all kinds of installations – particularly public buildings such as schools, museums, libraries, exhibition spaces or anywhere else that requires a visual kick – while enabling contractors to offer their customers a completely unique flooring solution.
Floorink allows people to get creative with their floor space, rather than having to choose from a standard range or set pattern. The high quality of the print allows clients to have very intricate designs and detailed photographs reproduced to fill their floor area. The flooring is printed to fit the required area exactly so there is minimal waste product.
Printed Space has licence agreements with a number of mapping suppliers, illustrators, photographers and artists, such as Geographers A-Z, Cassini and TFL, to give clients a variety of styles to suit each project. Bespoke creations are encouraged and Printed Space has a dedicated in house artwork team that will work closely with customers to achieve the floor design desired. Artists and photographers can also be commissioned to create the imagery clients are looking to have printed, if they do not have something suitable themselves.
With an enviable reputation for both quality and delivery, Printed Space has already worked with many high profile clients across a range of projects from well-known restaurant brands, finance corporations, museums and retail stores to educational buildings across the UK.
