18th Avenue Library completes first phase renovation
The Science and Engineering Library in the Ohio State University, which has been renamed as the 18th Avenue Library, has completed a $725,000 transformation as part of a two-year, $1.5 million project.
Adding new elements to the library, the upgrade included addition of variety of seating and tables of different heights and sizes to meet the needs of the students. The added tables come with an electrical outlet on the table itself or right next to it.
In order to provide a calm and private atmosphere to the reader, stretches of counter-like table space separated by clouded glass privacy screens have also been installed in the library.
The renovation has decreased the number of seats from approximately 1,146 to 1,086 to make the most efficient use of place, and making the place more user-friendly for the students.
In addition to that new group-work stations have also been installed in the basement. The group-work stations consist of a horseshoe-shaped table around a hub with wires to connect all the group members’ laptops. A large button on each of the cords, when pressed, displays the corresponding laptop’s screen on a large screen at the end of the table. Four of these stations have varying table heights.
The conference room features seats chosen by students. The renovated library offers enough work space to accommodate various papers and books, a mix of solitary and group-work spaces, comfortable chairs, and darker tables to provide contrast to white paper.
Renovated in phases, the next phase of the renovation project includes the re-imagination of the first floor and renovation of the restrooms, according to a library official.
