Published: 08-Feb-2010

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the state government of Karnataka would soon be signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the expansion of Belgaum airport in the south Indian state of Karnataka.

The government had already acquired 298 acres of the 370 acres required for airport expansion and plans on handing it over to the AAI at the earliest.

The work on the modification of the existing airport terminal building, taken up at a cost of INR35.7 million ($857,541 approx.), is nearing completion. The terminal would now have an air-conditioned security zone, three check-in counters with feeder conveyor, spacious arrival hall with conveyors, VIP room, space for four airline offices, surveillance CCTV/ security control room and a parking facility for 50 cars.

B S Yeddyurappa, chief minister of Karnataka, promised a supply of water, electricity and security for the airport, which were the conditions, put by the AAI to sign the MoU.

The airport controller stated that the night-landing facility would be commissioned after assessing the safety aspects.
