Atkins to lead development of new hub airport in UK

Published: 13-Feb-2013

UK-based design and project management consultancy Atkins has been appointed to help a team of experts in developing plans for a multi-runway hub airport in the south east.

Atkins will lead airport design and infrastructure, surface access and environmental impacts. The company will partner with Zaha Hadid Architects and Pascall+Watson on some elements of the airport design and infrastructure package.

Mike Pearson, UK director of airports at Atkins, said: “This project is not purely about the creation of a new hub airport, it’s about forming the foundations for London’s future development and reaffirming the UK’s position as a key international centre.

Around 15 proposals were received for a new hub airport. The shortlisted proposals are expected to be announced in the near future. The team will combine their expertise to produce detailed feasibility studies of the shortlisted options that the mayor will submit to the Davies Commission.
