Balfour Beatty breaks ground on office building in Washington, D.C.
Published: 30-May-2012
US-based commercial construction company Balfour Beatty Construction has begun construction on 1700 New York Avenue, NW office building in Washington, D.C., US.
Balfour Beatty has been chosen by Carr Properties to provide both preconstruction and construction services for the new office. The new office block will sit adjacent to the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
The project has been designed by US-based architectural practice SmithGroup. The building will encompass eight levels and will be made entirely in glass. Its top three floors will cantilever to the south over the Corcoran Gallery roof. The building will cover a total area of 122,000 square feet.
Construction of the building will be done within the parameters of sustainable development. It includes use of regionally-sourced and reclaimed materials. The building will be designed to offer maximum natural light penetration. Energy-saving MEP systems, and a green roof system to collect rainwater will be among the other sustainable features. The project targets LEED Gold certification.
In addition to Class A office space, the facility will house rooftop congregating areas and a fitness centre. The property will also comprise two levels of below-grade parking and one level of below-grade office space. The project is penciled for completion in mid-2013.
