Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport modernisation project underway
A two-phase, $201.6 million terminal modernisation project is underway at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in the US.
This project is the most significant modernisation at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport since it was built in 1931. It will be a state-of-the-art terminal, which will improve safety and efficiency at the airport and modernise the appearance and amenities.
The first phase started in June 2011 included demolition and reconstruction on Concourses A and B. According to the airport spokeswoman, the second phase includes the demolition and renovation of Concourse C, and will begin once the other concourses open this spring. It is expected to complete in 2014.
The cargo area was also improved as part of the renovation to add more capacity. The airport will still feature 19 gates with the modernised terminal to feature swing gates. Post completion, the concourses will be connected beyond the security checkpoint to allow travelers to roam the length of the airport and browse expanded restaurant and retail options. Ticket agents will be able to pass luggage directly to security and to baggage handlers via conveyor belts during check-in.
The renovation work is almost 67% complete. Workers are currently laying carpet, installing security checkpoint equipment and putting cosmetic touches, furniture and fixtures into the renovated concourses, while airlines have started installing their logos at the new ticketing area.
The upgrades will bring the airport in line with amenities and post-September 11 security standards.
