Published: 13-Mar-2013

Bishop Ranch business park in Contra Costa County, California has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for 37 office buildings from the U.S. Green Building Council.

These buildings are spread over an area of about six million square feet in the San Ramon business center. About 30,000 people work at Bishop Ranch and has about 600 tenants.

A majority of Bishop Ranch's buildings are Energy Star rated. The park has incorporated various modern systems and technologies which help in saving more than 3.5 million kilowatts per year through energy-saving initiatives. Over 384,000 kilowatts were saved in the buildings by starting janitorial services early. The buildings also employ motion-sensor switching and manual checks.

The green cleaning program at Bishop Ranch includes 100% green-certified products used in janitorial/cleaning services. More than 200,000 pounds of waste is saved annually by using microfibre cloths instead of paper towels.

The comprehensive recycling program at Bishop Ranch consists of annual reuse of 100% light fixtures and 91% ceiling tiles. More than two million pounds of grass, leaves and green waste is sent to compost annually. More than 380,000 pounds of paper, glass, bottles and cans are recycled annually along with 88 tons of cardboard and more than 22,000 pounds of electronic waste. The business park has also set up an exclusive hotline for tenants to schedule free pick-ups for electronic waste.

The award-winning transit programme at Bishop Ranch includes free bus passes valued at $2,000,000 provided annually to Bishop Ranch commuters; and elimination of 10,000 cars from roads daily because of transportation programs, and 15 million gallons of gas saved annually. Over 60% of cars driving to Bishop Ranch are aided by vanpool and carpool initiatives. Premium parking spots have been allotted for hybrid vehicles.
