The project involved painting the walls of the 15,000 square feet building in vibrant orange, pink and green. The carpet has brown undertones but contains the same colors. The space is open, with enhanced lighting.

The library has got separate sections specifically dedicated to children, teens and adults. More than 70 computers are arrayed at various library work stations. Laptops are also available. The refurbished library also features a separate space and collection for teens, as well as a room where video games can be played.

The renovated facility features photos and biographical information about famous Kansas City people who lived in the area. They include former mayor Ilus Davis; civic leaders Bruce Watkins, Leon Jordan, Barnett Helzberg Sr. and the Rev. D.A. Holmes; and show business greats Walt Disney and Jean Harlow. The entry of the library features a photographic and biographic display of Lucile Bluford, editor and publisher of The Call newspaper.
