Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport in Minnesota plans for terminal renovation

The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, is planning for a $6.4 million renovation and expansion of its 30 year-old terminal to offer a more futuristic look, added space and a jet bridge.

The current terminal renovation scheme has been necessitated by the reorganization of the facility following the 9/11 attack. The terminal features open seating area for waiting passengers, with bathrooms across the hallway. Post 9/11, the airport created office space for the Transportation Security Administration and transformed the open seating area into a secure zone.

The proposed renovation plan is designed to offer a new face to the terminal building. The red brick would be covered with an insulated metal panel in an attempt to improve energy-efficiency properties of the building. A raised center skylight will be added to allow more natural light into the terminal’s interior. A secure and private baggage screening area will also be added. The project will also undertake bathroom renovations to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

A jet bridge might also be added as part of the scheme. The bridge will link the terminal to the waiting aircraft. Passengers, including those who need a wheelchair, will be benefited as they can use the bridge link to reach certain planes. The secure waiting area for passengers will be enhanced, by bumping out the current space onto the tarmac.
