Burton Baldridge Architects designs the Kimber Modern hotel
Published: 09-Feb-2010
Texas-based Burton Baldridge Architects (BBA) recently completed designing the Kimber Modern hotel in Austin, Texas.
Located at 110 The Circle, BBA designed a sloping zigzag scheme that opened onto a sizeable courtyard. The scheme had been designed with an intention to follow the slope up the hill and create a physical buffer between the commerce at the front and the residential character of the bungalows beyond. The courtyard situated at the back of the house is a quiet refuge from the bars, dumpsters and beer trucks.
The building features five rooms and a suite, laundry facilities and six bathrooms. It also has a landscaped courtyard, offices for an accountant and employees, a semi hidden deck housing a 26 feet air stream trailer atop the building which serves as a conference room.
All the walls have been made out of staggered studs, plywood sheathing and noise-retarding drywall to ensure sonic separation. Exterior doors are fully casketed to further guarantee a silent ambience.
The common area features a full kitchen faced in glass and stainless steel. The interiors also feature original artwork and carefully considered luxury appointments and trade dress. Attention has also been paid on incorporating green building components to lessen its carbon footprint. Each of the rooms has been driven by a single heat pump governed by a micro-processor. The rooms also feature operable windows on opposing walls to ensure natural ventilation and thickened, insulated exterior walls.
The entire western façade is composed of a cement-board rain-screen such that radiant heat never reaches the building enclosure.
