Bush Center by Robert A.M. Stern Architects breaks ground in Texas

Published: 22-Nov-2010

Ground has been broken for the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas, which is designed as a modern brick and limestone structure that complements the American Georgian character of the Southern Methodist University (SMU) campus.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center on the campus of SMU is designed by New York-based Robert A.M. Stern Architects. The Bush Center is a dynamic hub of ideas, innovation, and action that will include a presidential library to preserve and present the story of the presidency; a state-of-the-art facility, accompanied by a unique web presence, to convene and connect visitors from across the world; and an action-oriented institute to develop solutions to global challenges.

Robert A.M. Stern Architects has designed the George W. Bush Presidential Center to carry forward the tradition of Southern Methodist University's Georgian-style campus, with simple wall planes faced with Texas limestone and red brick relieved by rhythmically disposed divided-light windows.

The building presents three distinct facades: on the north, the public entrance to the museum and Presidential archives stands at the head of a colonnaded court; to the west, the entrance to the George W. Bush Institute is through a portico that concludes the important Binkley Avenue axis of the campus; and to the south, the institute faces university recreational fields, with the Dallas skyline visible in the distance beyond. On the east side, service areas help buffer the centre from the noise of an adjoining freeway. A large lantern atop Freedom Hall, the museum's central atrium, identifies the centre from the campus and from the city.

The building and landscape are designed to achieve LEED platinum certification and include numerous sustainable design strategies, including locally sourced building materials; 20% recycled materials; solar hot water panels; native landscaping to reduce irrigation; and a storm-water management system that conveys, cleanses and collects surface runoff and roof rainwater, and will provide 50% of the irrigation needed for the site.

The facility will feature a replica of the Oval Office designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects. Originally created in 1909, the oval office is the official office of the president of the US, which is decorated to suit the taste of each president. The Oval Office will be complete with an outdoor Texas Rose Garden that mimics the proportion and scale of the White House Rose Garden. The architects have captured the spatial relationship and interaction between the Oval Office and the Rose Garden. Saddam Hussein’s pistol will also be on display at the Bush Center.

Michael Van Valkenburgh is the landscape architect for the project and Manhattan Construction Co., which also built the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas, serves as the general contractor.
