Cannon Design honoured for Power House restoration project in Missouri
Published: 01-Sep-2010
Cannon Design, a New York-based architectural design company, has scooped the 2010 International Architecture Award for its restoration work on the old Municipal Power House building in downtown St. Louis, Missouri.
The 1928-built Power House building has been re-opened as the new regional offices of Cannon Design. After lying vacant for nearly 30 years, the 19,000 square feet Power House building underwent a $8.75 million adaptive reuse project and also achieved LEED-Gold status. The Power House was an original part of the Municipal Service Building complex and was designated as a landmark by the National Historic Register.
Cannon Design has applied an integrated, holistic approach at every stage of the restoration/rehabilitation process. The revamped Power House features a three-storey interior gallery formed by constructing two partial levels. These levels along with the existing two floors and rooftop penthouse create a total of 32,000 square feet of office and conference space. The new floors are set back from the building’s spectacular windows to maintain the building’s sense of transparency and volume.
The interior, which was essentially an empty shell, was completely rehabilitated, with installation of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical infrastructure. External modifications include historically accurate replacement of windows in their original masonry openings and creation of an urban garden spanning a 3,500 square feet. The renovated exterior retains the original look with the terra-cotta detailing and 25ft-high arched windows on two facades.
Cannon Design’s own design and construction management teams worked on the restoration project.
The annual International Architecture Awards, organised by the Chicago Athenaeum and the Urban Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, seek to honour the most significant, new architecture designed after 1 January 2008.
