Carlos Place and Mount Street scheme in London wins 2013 Civic Trust Award

Published: 13-Mar-2013

The public realm scheme for Carlos Place and Mount Street designed by the international practice BDP in the Mayfair area of London, has received the 2013 Civic Trust Award.

Reviving the grandeur of Carlos Place and Mount Street, the project has improved pedestrian experience, removed clutter and introduced high quality surfacing materials.

The heart of the scheme features an oval sculptural water feature ‘Silence’ designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. This reflective installation is lined with circular glass lenses that illuminate the water feature at night and reflect light into two retained mature trees. Water is allowed to uniformly spill over the features perimeter while projecting jets allow a moist haze to further animate this distinctive place.

Enhancing the public realm significantly, the street has become the model for enlightened streetscape improvements. The scheme was designed for property development, investment and fund management group Grosvenor.

The 2013 Civic Trust Awards winners were announced on 9 March 2013 at Cardiff City Hall. They are given to projects of the highest quality design, which have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local community.
