Clark Construction, SOM to develop Federal Courthouse in Los Angeles

Clark Construction and American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and LLP have been jointly awarded a $318 million design-build contract by the US General Services Administration (GSA) to develop the New United States Courthouse in Los Angeles.

As per the contract, the joint venture will involve construction of a 550,000 square-foot court building in downtown Los Angeles. Referred to as "Cube", the new facility will feature 24 courtrooms and 32 judicial chambers.
The Cube will be anchored by two levels of below-grade parking, as well as mechanical and back-of-house spaces. The project team will also construct a structural frame for the Cube that sits back an entire bay around the first floor, providing for 36 additional feet of setback on each side of the building perimeter. A sky-lit central courtyard will also be featured.
Designed to address the Federal Government's blast and setback requirements, the courthouse will accommodate the US District Court, US Marshals Services, US Attorneys' Office, a GSA field office, the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Services, and the Federal Public Defender.
Aiming for LEED Platinum, the building envelope will feature a high-performance faceted curtain wall façade, which will provide a lively expression to courthouse. Apart from that it will also reduce radiant heat input through the building envelope and provide ample natural light to internal courtrooms and common areas.
Construction is expected to begin in late summer 2013 and will be complete in April 2016.
