CLEM7 canopies in Australia impersonate subtropical shade trees

Published: 31-Mar-2010

The recently unveiled M7 Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7) in Brisbane, Australia, designed by AECOM and Parsons Brinckerhoff, displays sculptural canopies that are designed to resemble trees.

The CLEM7 is an AUD$3.2 billion ($2.9 billion approx) toll road built under the Brisbane River.

One of the distinctive features of the tunnel is a series of three distinctive canopy structures. They are conceived by design team from California-based architectural and engineering design service provider AECOM and New York-based planning and engineering firm Parsons Brinckerhoff, for Brisbane City Council. AECOM was appointed to undertake all urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design and architecture for both the bid phase and the delivery phase of the CLEM7.

CLEM7 canopies exemplify Brisbane’s maturing urban landscape. The flowing canopies are designed to mimic Brisbane’s expansive subtropical shade trees. This not only helps it to be iconic in design, and also serves functional purpose for tunnel users. Metal louvers integrated within the structures filter sunlight and give shade to the users.

Complex rolling steel trusses, which are covered in metallic copper-colored architectural panels support each canopy. These panels are individually cut and fitted to match the complex curves. During night, the canopies wear colored light enhancing the copper tones of the metal panels.

CLEM7 features Australia’s longest and most technically advanced tunnel, with sophisticated tolling and tunnel safety, and innovative urban design and landscaping.
