ComA designs Portuguese youth hostel extension
Published: 19-Mar-2010
Portuguese practice ComA Architects has designed an extension to an old youth hostel named Movijovem Youth Hostel in Portugal, featuring a timber-clad building that houses 20 rooms.
The new 69,410 square meter extension to the old youth hostel, located in the biggest mountain in Portugal, features 20 rooms, a living room and other facilities for the young guests.
ComA has designed the extension taking into account the relationship of the new structure with the old youth hostel structure, and the architectural surroundings. This has helped in creating a close link between the old and new buildings. The new structure is designed as an independent volume with singular views to the mountains. This new two-story volume also blends well with the local architecture, offering a contemporary interpretation of it. The interior of the hostel extension displays a design that focus more on ways of approaching proportion, light and materials, than on style.
The architects have taken great care to ensure that the new building will not become a visual barrier along the landscape.
