Construction begins on Antwerp Port Authority' new HQ

Published: 10-Oct-2012

Construction work has begun on Port House, the new headquarters of the Antwerp Port Authority at the Kattendijk dock in Antwerp, Belgium.

Designed by the famed British architect Zaha Hadid, the new headquarters are being built to accommodate increasing space shortage at Port Authority's existing office.

Consisting of a beam-shaped structure raised above the former fire station, the new Port House is a two-part design. It features a volumetric composition, with the two parts of the building offering panoramic views across the city and its port.

The new building also features a façade that is comprised of glass triangles, producing a constantly changing play of reflected light. It will use a modular construction of six large elements that are prefabricated in Wondelgem and transported to Antwerp by barge.

Belgian steelwork contractor Victor Buyck Steel Construction is the subcontractor responsible for the 1500-tonne steel structure. The construction work will take 33 calendar months to complete.
