The project included updated locker rooms, coaches offices and classrooms in the existing athletics building along with the addition of 29,000 square feet Art Smith Arena, which will serve as a venue for events and men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball team matches. The new facility will be handicap accessible, with a ground-level entrance, new elevator, and a 6,600 square feet lobby with new concessions stand and restroom facilities.

A notable element of the facility is the Art Smith arena with a lobby designed to enhance the student experience. The new arena will seat 2,430 people with additional floor seating of 600 available for non-athletics events. It will feature an electronic video board and a horseshoe seating around the playing court that will make it more convenient for viewing games. The basketball court will feature theatre-style seating on the ‘home’ side of the court.

The new addition is also designed to be Alma College’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building. Sustainable components of the new facility includes use of recycled content in ceiling panels, carpet, rubber and vinyl floor tiles, bleacher construction and sub-floor system in the new arena; light pollution reduction; water efficient landscaping; maximised energy performance; water use reduction measures; and energy star compliant roof system.

Construction on the facility began in March 2009. The facility was named after Art Smith, a 1938 Alma College graduate who worked as a teacher as well as a coach from 1956 to 1978.
