Delhi airport to have full-body scanners

By the end of the Commonwealth Games in October 2010, officials would decide as to who would get the multi-million dollar contract to supply permanent equipment. At present, the security checks at Indian airports include pat-down searches, walkthrough metal detectors, and hand-held scanners.
Delhi and Mumbai would need about 125-200 full-body scanners at a cost of $160,000 to $200,000. The official said that the trial runs will not only give the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security a constructive insight into functioning of equipment, but also into which company is best suited to fulfill the order. A handful of countries, like the USA, the UK, France and Israel manufacture these scanners. Most of the scanners imported to India on trial would be products of the American companies. These trials would also help assess the performance during power fluctuations or outages.
Apart from this, an official from the civil aviation ministry stated that all ground staff and airline officials would have biometric identification cards from March 2010 with dedicated points to enter the Delhi airport. This is a secure and efficient means of identification. The biometric card would have an embedded micro-chip incorporating tamper-proof features of an individual that will be impossible to forge, stated the official.
