El Altet Airport in Spain to unveil new terminal

Published: 30-Sep-2010

El Altet Airport, the sixth busiest airport in Spain, will soon unveil a new terminal, which is designed to handle 20 million passengers per annum.

The development project at the El Altet airport involved a new line of boarding gates parallel to the runway, and a processing building which is at right angles. The area covers 333,500 square metres, which is approximately six times the area of the current terminals one and two. The facility features 16 airline ‘fingers’ compared to five at present.

The departures hall spanning 15,500 square metre features 96 check-in desks, which was previously just 52. About 14 luggage carousels have also been added. A new 4,200-space car park facility is currently underway which will add 4,200 spaces to the current 2,000. A luggage system which can handle 7,680 suitcases an hour, and new access roads and power facilities to serve the new terminal, are also underway.

The new terminal is part of the Plan Levante from the Development Ministry to modernise airport infrastructure. The total cost of the work on the airport between 2004 and 2011 is estimated at €570 million ($777.48 million), of which €384 million ($523.77 million) have been spent on the new terminal.

The new terminal lies adjacent to Terminal 1 and is expected to be fully functional in the first quarter of 2011.
