Erik Andersson designs first air-heated bridge in Sweden

Published: 13-Mar-2013

Erik Andersson Architects has designed Tullhus Bridge, which is Sweden's first air-heated bridge with an in-built heating system that can melt snow and ice on the 70-metre pedestrian walkway.

Located in Norrköping, Tullhus Bridge connects Strömsholmen to the north quay in the city centre, and is open to pedestrians and cyclists.

The 70m bridge is made of steel and is hourglass-shaped which tapers in the centre with the middle portion at a depth of 0.86m. The completely insulated bridge is made with prefabricated pieces and includes vibration dampers to counteract vertical oscillations, keeping it stable.

The bridge’s handrails feature LED lights for illuminating the walkway in the night. The paint used on its underside reflects the water of the river Motala Strom.

The bridge has been part of the urban planning since the early 1950s. In 2008 the municipality invited Erik Andersson Architects to an architectural competition for the construction of the bridge in 2012. Erik Andersson Architects partnered with Ramboll, Lecor Stålteknik AB and WSP on the project.
