Gascoigne Associates designs Cocoro restaurant in New Zealand
Published: 24-Mar-2011
New Zealand-based architects Gascoigne Associates have designed the Cocoro Japanese restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand.
Housed in a former warehouse, the restaurant is lined with wooden slats hanging over the exposed concrete walls and ceiling. Between the slats, the LED lighting and sound insulation of the restaurant lie concealed.
The interior décor features large squares of woven charcoal and chocolate carpet that resemble subtle tatami-style matting. All the materials selected to build the place are recyclable. The ceilings are sandblasted exposed concrete, lined with Macrocarpa batons. Various battens hang against the raw exposed concrete ceiling and above the banquet seating on each sidewall and the table in the centre. It subtly hides LED downlights which place the focus on food.
The designers wanted to create an interior that is natural, modern and comfortable. The contemporary space has been laid out both for lunch and dinner. The six metre long Macrocarpa dining table in the centre of the restaurant has been cut from a single tree with 40 seats include those at the central dining table where singles can eat cafe-style or couples can sit side-by-side to enjoy meals. White linen, curve-backed chairs and meticulous table settings are other features of the restaurant.
The space also features circular graphics, part of the the restaurant’s logo, which have been printed on the up-lit black walls. The back wall has a rectangular slot to allow diners to have a view of the kitchen.
