Graven Images creates soothing spa experience at Blythswood Square in Scotland

Published: 30-Sep-2010

Blythswood Square - The Townhouse Collection’s new luxury five-star spa hotel in Glasgow City Centre, Scotland - features soothing and rejuvenating design elements.

UK-based Graven Images has designed the hotel as a soothing refuge from the bright lights and busy streets of one of the UK’s most vibrant cities.

The Spa at the Blythswood Square hotel, considered to be Glasgow's first luxury spa, is located over two floors, covering an area of 10,000 square feet. It incorporates nine luxury treatment rooms, a thermal suite with a range of experiences, two relaxation pools, a relaxing lounge and cafe area, and several additional relaxation areas.

Reception and changing rooms are located on the lower level and treatment rooms on the upper level. The spa offers a soft sensory experience to the guests with a muted, largely monochromatic colour palette of natural stone, Calacatta marble, dark oiled oak veneers and subtle lighting, creating a calm, serene mood.

The Spa’s dark vitality pool is situated at the furthermost point from the Spa’s entrance, where lighting, dark natural stone and a cool, dark body of water combine to create a moody, dream-like environment.

The Blythswood Square Spa offers a range of specially designed treatments including the Blythswood Thermal Experience, a seven stage journey of alternating temperature experiences to sooth, relax and detoxify the body prior to spa treatments or as a restorative therapy. The Spa’s menu also features the UK’s first indigenous Scottish treatments designed in conjunction with luxury organic skincare house, ila, and special Seaweed Bath complete with organic hand-harvested seaweed sourced direct from the Hebrides.

The emphasis on distinctly Scottish products continues the theme established by Graven Images and its client The Townhouse Collection in the Blythswood Square hotel. Scotland’s textile heritage is celebrated with the creative use of luxury fabric ‘Harris Tweed’ on a range of luxurious floor-length curtains to bespoke lampshades, chairs and event waiters’ uniforms.

Jim Hamilton, Graven Images’ design director, stated that the firm wanted to continue the guest experience of staying at Blythswood Square hotel into the spa. The design celebrates all that is good about contemporary Scotland. Blythswood Square in Glasgow city centre, the newest and most magnificent addition to The Town House Collection of luxury boutique hotels in Scotland, features 88 luxury bedrooms, suites and beauty spa. The hotel is housed in a restored landmark property, which dates from 1823, and was previously the home of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club.

Graven Images provides design services to corporate, public, hotel and leisure sectors including interior design, branding and communications design and exhibition design.
