HDR secures design-build contract for New Tappan Zee Bridge in New York

American architecture, engineering, consulting, and construction firm HDR has received a design-build contract from the New York State Thruway Authority Board of Directors to construct Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing in New York.

Designed for a 100-year service life, the Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing will be mass-transit-ready for bus rapid transit on the span, or for commuter or light rail on structures between the two spans.
The scheme features twin 3-mile structures with 1200 feet cable stayed main span bridges carrying eight general traffic lanes plus emergency lanes and extra-wide shoulders for immediate express bus service. It also features a new toll plaza with at least three highway speed E-ZPass lanes and a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian path on the northern span. Keeping the safety measures in mind, the scheme also features anti-climb fencing and security cameras to be monitored 24 hours a day.
A unique and innovative design was developed for the crossing that reduced the weight of the structure and minimised the number and size of foundations required. The design solution also utilises a shallow superstructure and a 350’ long-span design to minimise the number of piers and provide a sleek looking bridge that enhances the view corridors within the lower Hudson Valley. The main span is a composite deck cable-stayed structural system with outwardly inclined main span towers that create an iconic look and accommodate future transit loads.
HDR is the lead designer and subcontractor, for Tappan Zee Constructors, a consortium that also includes Fluor Enterprises, American Bridge Company, Granite Construction Northeast, and Traylor Bros.
