John Wayne Airport is undergoing a long-planned and substantial improvement program, which is designed to accommodate up to 10.8 million passengers annually. Heery has been tasked with commissioning the new 282,000 square feet, multi-level Terminal C and the new central utility plant for the $543 million airport improvement program. The firm is providing commissioning from the design phase through warranty, and is also responsible for the coordination and interfacing with the existing Terminals A and B and the new Terminal C to the central plant.

Work is underway on the extensive program, the airport’s first major renovation in nearly 20 years. Construction activity on the central plant and Terminal C, which includes six new bridged gates and replacement commuter gates, began in July 2009. The entire airport improvement program is scheduled to be completed in late 2011.

Heery was initially selected several years ago to commission a cogeneration facility the airport had planned, at which time Heery participated in and successfully delivered a comprehensive set of constructability reviews for that project. Since that time, the scope of the cogeneration facility project and cost were revised. Recently, JWA selected Heery through JWA’s competitive professional services selection process to commission Terminal C and to commission a redefined central plant facility.

Colin Moar, Heery’s northwest regional commissioning director says, “the commissioning process we have planned could yield JWA up to five times the return on its commissioning investment and in efficiency and operational savings, a potential of $7 million to $8 million over the buildings’ 25-year life-cycle costs.”
