IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting range to preview at Design Museum

Published: 15-Feb-2013

One of the pieces from the IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE range of lights, designed by Issey Miyake, will be showcased at the Design Museum in London ahead of the entire collection’s launch in the UK in March 2013.

The IN-EI Tatsuno-Otoshigo light will be on display as part of the ‘Extraordinary Stories About Ordinary Things’ exhibition that will run from 30 January 2013 until 4 January 2015. The ethos of the IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE range reflects the exhibition which deals with the themes of energy saving and sustainability – key ideas in the design of this light.

IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE was born from collaboration with lighting specialist Artemide. It is a collection of freestanding, table and hanging lights.

“IN-EI” is Japanese for “shadow, shadiness, nuance”. Each lampshade is created using 2D or 3D mathematic principals, where light and shade harmoniously alternate. Miyake’s unique folding technology creates both statuesque forms as well as sufficient solidity. The structure of the recycled material, together with an additional surface treatment allows these shades to keep their shape without the need for internal frame, and to be re-shaped when needed. They can also be easily stored flat when not in use.

The project revolves around a fabric derived from entirely recycled materials, diffusing light in interesting ways. It is a re-treated fibre made using PET bottles. The bottles are processed using an innovative technology that reduces both energy consumption and CO2 emissions up to 40% when compared to the production of new materials. Artemide animates these sustainable and striking shapes using LED lighting.
