International Motorsports Center in Florida honoured for environmental credentials

Published: 20-Dec-2010

The International Motorsports Center in Daytona Beach, Florida - the world headquarters for International Speedway Corporation (ISC), NASCAR and Grand-Am Racing Association (Grand-Am) - has won LEED-Gold certification.

The International Motorsports Center was designed inside and out to showcase motorsports. The shape of the building has been designed to represent the tri-oval of Daytona International Speedway. The columns represent the rhythm of lights that circle the track. The awning on top of the building was designed to resemble the profile of an aerodynamic spoiler with the overall look of the building to wear an appearance of motion.

The eight-storey building, completed in October 2009, was designed by incorporating several sustainable features. Eco-friendly construction and design features helped the building earn a total of 43 points towards LEED Gold certification.

The 190,000 square feet headquarters building uses 20% less energy than a traditional office building of the same size. The windows are applied with special coatings to transmit approximately 75% less heat compared to clear glass. The use of materials with 24% recycled content as well as with materials that were produced or grown regionally also contributed to LEED points. Another notable element is the open work plan design that brings exterior views to 90% of employee work spaces.

From an environmental standpoint, the International Motorsports Center is conceived as the cornerstone of ISC, NASCAR and Grand-Am’s commitment to a healthy environment.
