Iseppi/Kurath designs a service station in Switzerland
Published: 09-Mar-2010
Swiss studio Iseppi/Kurath has designed the Viamala Raststa¨tte Thusis, an alpine service station featuring weatherproof design in Graubünden, Switzerland.
Located next to the exit of Thusis-Nord at the highway A13 in Grisons, Switzerland, the 8,500 square meters Viamala Raststätte Thusis receives traffic from both north and south.
The station is a wooden structure that has been covered with metal on the outside. On the inside, the building has wooden panels lining its interiors. The entrance area is spacious.
The building accommodates shops, tourist information, a restaurant and bar that have been designed in a cross shaped layout and accommodate quieter areas for conference purposes. These areas feature large-format windows that open towards Viamala canyon, Muttnerhöhe, Schin canyon and the Domleschg valley. The restaurant, conference room and the shop have direct access to the outside, which is the reason for an absence of a fire exit.
In contrast to the exteriors is the service area, which features a wooden interior. The service station also has an underground floor that is located below the building. The underground floor can be accessed by means of stairs and a freight elevator and features heating, building technology, storage and staff wardrobes.
