Jeju International Airport enters final phase upgrades

Published: 23-Jan-2012

Jeju International Airport in South Korea has entered the final phase of work on the final phase of a KRW324 billion ($284.99 million) makeover.

The project, executed in four phases, involves overhaul of the domestic departure terminal. The earlier three phases have led to expansion of the runways, expansion of the parking space, as well as construction of the international terminal. The fourth phase worth KRW80 billion ($70.36 million) will involve increasing the size of the domestic terminal by 23,000 square metres.

The route from baggage checking area through security to boarding the flight will be rearranged as part of this phase. The security counter will now be relocated to the centre. The reorganisation of the route will cut down passenger walking distance from 350 metres to 220 metres.

The revamped airport will house a station for rental car companies. Plans are also on to incorporate check-in kiosks, and enable check-in from home through internet or smartphone application. The airport will be able to accommodate 23 million passengers post upgrades which is nearly twice its existing capacity of 12 million.
