Kotoka International Airport starts third phase of construction
Published: 12-Mar-2010
The third phase of construction, estimated to cost around $51 million, has begun at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, Ghana.
The third phase of the KIA development project includes reconstruction of the taxiway pavements, apron pavements, installation of aeronautical ground lighting systems and fuel mains to the new aprons. The new fire station, which forms the part of the project, is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.
Mike Hammah, the minister of transport, was reported stating that the construction of a modern fire station will enable the airport to achieve the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recommended response time of not exceeding two minutes to the end of the operational runway in optimum visibility during an emergency.
The Kotoka International Airport is an important international air facility in the country and has capacity for large aircraft such as the Airbus A380. The airport is operated by Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
