The project will include a teen library on the lower level and will have about 2,000 square feet of space and feature extensive audio-visual materials, a bank of computers and a multipurpose area.

A younger children’s library will also be constructed. It will comprise about 3,000 square feet of space on the main level, with reading areas for different ages and a freshened up collection of books. A new 335-seat auditorium will be constructed on the library’s main level. The Centennial Room will remain in the basement of the north wing.

Works will also be done on the main lobby, including plastering and restoration of the marble, the two grand staircases, murals and the artificial skylight. In addition, the project includes new windows throughout the south wing, the cleaning and repair of exterior limestone on the south wing’s façade, and upgrading of two reading rooms on the second floor.

As a part of this project, some new flood protections will be designed to prevent future damage, which includes a new sewer trunk line, exterior drainage work, a lift station to separate storm water from sewage water, two injection wells to divert storm water directly into the aquifer, and berms to direct any floodwater away from the library’s basement.
