Marina Bay Sands resort celebrates its grand opening in Singapore
Published: 23-Jun-2010
Marina Bay Sands, the $5 billion, high-density, mixed-use integrated resort will celebrate its grand opening in Singapore on June 23, 2010, featuring three-acre grand SkyPark built atop the three hotel towers.
The 55-story Marina Bay Sands resort includes several components such as a Hotel, Sands Skypark, Casino, Sands Expo and Convention Center and ArtPath. The resort offers panoramic views of the shimmering Singapore skyline.
The Sands SkyPark is the focal point of the resort and is expected to create a new gateway to Singapore. This unique structural masterpiece, designed by American architect Moshe Safdie, floats atop the three soaring Marina Bay Sands hotel towers above 200 meters in the sky. Stretching longer than the Eiffel tower laid down horizontally or four and a half A380 Jumbo Jets, the SkyPark is spread over 12,400 square meters of space and can host up to 3,900 people. The gravity-defying cantilever is considered as one of the largest of its kind in the world. The Sands SkyPark features landscaped gardens that are home to 250 types of trees and 650 types of plants. A 150-meter swimming pool links across the span of the three hotel towers, with an infinity edge overlooking the city. The pool is considered as the world’s largest outdoor pool at that height. The SkyPark also features an observation deck, jogging paths, restaurants and lounges.
The three hotel towers features 2,560 luxury rooms. The Casino at the resort is designed in an ‘atrium style’ with four levels of gaming and entertainment, and is distinct with a seven-ton Swarovski crystal chandelier. The casino features 500 tables and offers a choice of table games to suit all players including Baccarat, Roulette, Sic-Bo, Singapore Stud Poker, Non Commission Baccarat and Money Wheel.
The Sands Expo and Convention Center is a 121,000 square meters of flexible space, including one of the largest ballrooms in Asia. The ArtPath includes seven site-specific works selected by Moshe Safdie to enhance the visitor experience. They include works by James Carpenter, Antony Gormley, Ned Kahn, Sol LeWitt, and Chongbin Zheng.
The retail component of the resort includes the Shoppes spread over 800,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and is considered as Singapore's first large-scale luxury shopping destination. The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands include prestigious names such as Bally, Bottega Veneta, Bvlgari, Burberry, Cartier, Chanel, Christian Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Hermès, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and more. The Shoppes also offers a luxury boat ride in the clam waters of Marina Bay.
The resort also houses a lotus-inspired museum. Moshe Safdie designed the resort for the Las Vegas Sands Corporation.
