MET Studio to open new permanent exhibition at IWM Duxford
Exhibition design consultants MET Studio in partnership with Imperial War Museums (IWM) will open a new permanent exhibition at IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire, which will focus on the former military airfield’s war- and peace-time history.
Located at the old Watch Office, the exhibition will bring Duxford’s history as a fully-operational military airfield from 1918 to 1961 for a family audience. The exhibition will showcase some of the historic buildings along with personal stories and testimonials, which will provide the visitors a direct insight into the lives of the men and women who lived and worked on this busy RAF base.
The exhibition will combine sound, film, interactive models and original objects to paint a vivid picture of daily life at RAF Duxford. An introductory film will describe the first impressions of some of the 1500+ people who lived at RAF Duxford during its time of active service.
The exhibition will provide a textured and broad account of life at RAF Duxford, featuring not just pilots and commanding officers, but ground crew, domestic staff and cleaners. Visitors will get a glimpse of everyday life at this famous fighter base, from leisure time occupations to living quarters. Even airfield romance will be featured in this exhibition.
The exhibition has been designed by taking care of the needs of the visually-impaired and hearing-impaired, as well as for visitors with physical disabilities. The 3D model of RAF Duxford has used vibrating buttons and smells to represent the airfield, canteen and aircraft hangars, with carefully written audio directions to create an exhibit which is accessible to all.
The exhibition, which is scheduled to open on 28 March 2013, is the result of collaboration between MET Studio and the Interpretation and Collections Team from IWM Duxford.
