Mitchell International Airport to begin $41 million renovation to baggage claim area

Published: 11-Feb-2013

General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, US is planning to start $41.28 million renovation of its baggage claim area in the later part of 2013.

The baggage claim area at the airport was last renovated 25 to 30 years ago. With the bag belt systems completely worn out, the building is in an urgent need of a complete makeover, according to airport spokeswoman Pat Rowe.

The project will be executed in stages as part of the baggage claim area needs to be operational. The baggage claim area will also get new lighting as part of the project.

The makeover would be included as part of an overall $60 million bond issue to pay for the improvements at Mitchell, which is owned and operated by Milwaukee County. These bonds would also cover more than $8.4 million worth of improvements to the airport's electricity supply system, $4.3 million for a baggage screening system, $2.8 million for a training facility and $1 million worth of improvements to the airport's parking structure.

M.A. Mortenson Co. will be the construction manager for the project. The entire project is expected to complete by 2014.
