Morgan Sindall to build new Highland Council office in Scotland

Published: 01-Feb-2013

Morgan Sindall has been appointed to build the new £8 million ($12 million) offices for The Highland Council, in Wick, Scotland.

Work will involve demolition of the existing listed council building in Market Place, originally constructed in the 1860s, and construction of 24,000 square feet of contemporary office space.

The new office building will consist of three floors to the front and two at the back, and will house the Social Care and Education Culture and Sport departments currently based elsewhere in the town. The backside of the building will be clad in timber, with stone and glazing featuring at the frontage. It will also feature a clock face.

Morgan Sindall will also undertake the refurbishment and restoration of the adjoining curved Stafford Place Buildings which were built in the 1820s. The listed façade, which forms part of the High Street, will be preserved following consultations with Historic Scotland.

The new building will also employ various sustainable elements, including an environmentally-friendly biomass boiler. The project aims to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent, and will be completed by autumn 2014.
