Mylor Yacht Club’s $1.5 million redevelopment approved in UK

Published: 30-Jul-2010

Plans for the development of the $1.5 million Mylor Yacht Club have been approved by UK's Cornwall Council.

Development plans include demolition of the existing base on the 203-year-old listed quay at Mylor Yacht Harbour. This would be replaced with a larger building on the present site of Café Windsports that would occupy part of the new building as well.

The Club is located alongside a Grade I listed 12th Century church and a couple of Grade II listed Admiralty buildings. The new development plans has complemented the existing buildings of historical interest in the immediate vicinity. It has provided the Club with the space required to accommodate its members while acknowledging the sensitivities of scale particular to the site involved. The first floor of the conventional two-story structure was spinned through 90 degrees, reducing the mass for the first floor while creating an open terrace from where Club members will be able to enjoy panoramic views over the harbor.

The Archial Architects have worked in close collaboration with the English Heritage and the church for the development of the new Mylor Yacht Club’s design. Construction is set to take place between September 2010 and Easter 2011. On reaching completion, the club would be used as an Olympic Training Camp for Great Britain and other visiting teams to the 2012 Olympic Games.

Originally the most westerly Naval Dockyard and victualling station in England, then home to HMS Ganges and the Packet ships and center for the French Resistance during the Second World War, Mylor is now home to the last fleet of Oystermen under sail. It is renowned as a haven for water-lovers of all types.
