New domestic terminal opens at Biju Patnaik Airport in Odisha
A new domestic terminal, constructed at a cost of INR145 crore ($2.65 million), has opened at the Biju Patnaik Airport at Bhubaneswar in the Indian state of Odisha.
The new 18,240 square meters terminal will have a capacity to manage 800 passengers at a time. The interiors of the new terminal are adorned with stone sculptures, murals, paintings, textile hangings, and patchitra depicting the culture of Odisha state.
The glass and steel structure terminal provides modern amenities such as in-line compatible baggage handling system, escalators, elevators, PA system, as well as flight information display system and CCTV.
The new terminal is aimed at catering to the increased tourist inflow to the state. Bhubaneswar Airport earlier had 7500 feet runway with a small domestic terminal building which was able to operate four to five flights per day. The present airport has a runway length of 9,000 feet and operates nearly 20 flights per day with about 500 passengers capacity.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will transform the existing terminal building for international operations as part of the second phase that includes construction of a new technical-cum-control tower apart from extending the runway.
