New Huntley Fire Station 4 in Illinois secures LEED
Published: 29-Dec-2011
The new Huntley Fire Station 4 in Algonquin, Illinois, has secured LEED certification from the US Green Building Council.
The facility is the first sustainable fire station in McHenry County and the first eco-friendly building in Algonquin. It has been designed by Williams Architects and incorporates a host of green features. Among the various building features are a fitness centre, TV lounge consisting of leather recliners, separate bunks with soundproof walls, a kitchen comprising three refrigerators, a dining table having a capacity of eight, and a stove.
The inside walls of the station have been fitted with several windows to optimise natural light penetration in the interior and thereby reap energy savings. The windows also comprise a temperature control to control the climate of the facility.
The appliances used in the building add to the sustainability by running low on energy consumption. The facility further sports zero-maintenance native landscaping which needs little irrigation. It also comprises a bike rack, as well as dedicated parking lots for carpooling and flex-fuel vehicles to boost the green initiative.
