New pop-up structure opens at Riverside Cafe in Newcastle
Published: 10-Oct-2012
A new pop-up structure, designed by the students from Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn under guidance from top architects, has opened at the Riverside Cafe in Newcastle Emlyn, UK.
Comprising three developmental stages, the new pop-up structure will remain open for 28 days from 30 September to 31 October.
The first part of the project took place at the James Davies Woodmill. In this stage, explanations about the machines and the processes involved in the timber business were provided to ten, 13-14 year old students from Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn, Comprehensive School in Newcastle Emlyn (Ceredigion, Wales).
Taking back the students to the school, in the second part, Dan Benham from UK-based Loyn & Co Architects managed the design process in collaboration with Glan Morgan (Head of Arts), Aled James from Wales-based timber manufacturer Cartrefi Ffossaron Homes and Mike Wyatt of UK-based Roger Casey Associates. Experimenting with form structure and materials, the students with imagination and creativity had a hands-on approach to create an innovative and cutting edge 3D structure.
In the third part of the project, Aled and his team made the structure at his workshop in Pantybwlch, Newcastle Emlyn. They then erected it at the Riverside Cafe in Newcastle Emlyn in just one day.
