Published: 27-Sep-2011

The New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square, New York, US is undergoing a facelift worth about $39 million.

The project has been designed by Washington, DC-based ForrestPerkins. Work involves makeover of the hotel's guest rooms, lobby, public areas, two signature restaurants and lounges, and the ballroom.

The guest rooms in the building will comprise custom-made furnishings, high-definition TVs and desk consoles pull-out love seats and new carpeting as well as curtains following the makeover. The revamped rooms area also equipped with accent pin lighting fixtures on large headboards featuring nickel inlay work. The bathrooms have now been upgraded with spa shower curtains. Further, the remodelled rooms don neutral tones of cocoa-brown, cream and champagne. Overhaul of over 1,000 guest rooms has already been completed with the rest slated to be completed by early 2012.

The facility's new restaurant and lounge, Crossroads incorporates a mirrored spiral bar encompassing two floors. The bar is encircled with 11 high definition TVs with several low sofas, armchairs and four waterfall towers positioned in the centre. The seats in the restaurant sport a conventional style and have a capacity to house over 100 patrons. The sheets are encompassed by sliding perforated panel screens which serve private or more open events. The look is accentuated through suspended light rods made of crystal.

The upgraded Broadway Lounge features six sphere-shaped chandeliers with 234 shimmering clear glass balls. It also consists of two-storey arched windows formed of glass that provide views of Times Square. The lounge comprises multiple seating levels and imbibes deep turquoise, petrol blue, dark ginger and gray tones.

The project also involves refurbishment of the 29,000 square feet Broadway Ballroom with a maximum seating capacity of 2,400. The upgraded ballroom has been adorned with amorphous-shaped chandeliers replicated with a mid-sliced geode. The chandeliers are programmable and are sourced by colour-changing and energy-efficient LEDs. A black vanishing ceiling adds to the uniqueness of the room.

The hotel will also house the 140-seat Liberty Room on its eighth level. The windowed room, due to open in October 2011, will serve smaller banquets and events.
