Nordson unveils green HQ in Ohio

Published: 01-Feb-2011

Precision dispensing equipment manufacturer Nordson Corporation has opened its new global headquarters in Westlake, Ohio, which is studded with green building technologies and is designed to earn LEED certification.

A host of green and sustainable aspects have been integrated into the new 28,000 square feet Nordson office building to achieve the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

The building is fitted with optimised lighting systems such as motion-sensor and auto-dimming lights. Natural lighting has been extensively used in the building. The use of high-efficiency HVAC systems with individual air flow controls for employees; and installation of low flow water fixtures to dramatically reduce water consumption are some other energy-efficient features.

The headquarters facility features a partial green roof planted with native vegetation. The parking lot at the campus is constructed with permeable pavers and the bioswale landscape helps limit storm water generation. The reflective white roofing materials help in reducing heat island effects.

The office campus is distinct for a natural landscape design featuring an undisturbed wooded habitat. The extensive use of regionally sourced and recycled construction materials and priority parking for low-emitting, fuel-efficient and car pool vehicles are some other eco-friendly features.

Nordson’s LEED certification process is currently ongoing and is expected to take approximately a year to complete. The new Nordson building is anticipated to earn a LEED certification level of Silver or Certified and is registered under the latest version of the certification rating system, LEED v3.

There are currently only 62 LEED-certified buildings in the greater Cleveland area and 151 in all of Ohio according to the USGBC.

Cleveland-based architectural firm Doty & Miller Architects, the green building consultant on the project, was involved in helping Nordson to create an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly building.
