Ohio County Airport receives grant for terminal expansion

Published: 29-Aug-2011

The historic Wheeling-Ohio County Airport has secured a $127,500 grant from the US Department of Transportation for the expansion of its terminal under its Airport Improvement Program.

The funding would be used for renovating the terminal building. The project will be executed in different phases. The first phase will involve refurbishment of the interior spaces while the second phase will involve cleaning and painting of the building's exterior.

The project will encompass expansion in the area of the main lobby, refurbishment of the building's exterior and will also improve the security aspect of the terminal. Under the plans of the project, a new information center will be constructed for the public. The project will also involve renovation of the Federal Aviation Administration offices and the control tower. The terminal will also have additional lights on the ground, and will install new air conditioning and heating system as a part of this project. The project is planned to start in September 2011.

The terminal expansion project is the final phase of the airport improvement project that was launched 28 years ago. The Ohio County terminal building is a bit like an airplane museum. The lobby of the terminal is adorned with historical airplane-related items. These historical items and the terminal's appearance will remain unchanged.
