Onion Pinch and Porcupine: New installations at the Digital Primitive

Published: 03-Aug-2009

European designers Caterina Tiazzoldi and Eduardo Benamor Duarte unveil two installations, Onion Pinch and Porcupine, at the Digital Primitive event at the Experimenta Design Lisboa 2009.

Experimenta Design Bienal de Lisboa is an international event dedicated to design culture and creativity scheduled to be held from September 9-November 8. It is produced by Experimenta Association and constitutes one of Portugal’s cultural events. The prime factor of the Biennale is design. The Lisbon Biennale presents original projects in different formats, from conferences and projections to exhibitions, urban interventions and debates, in several venues in the city of Lisbon.

Onion Pinch is an installation placed in the Cais do Sodre subway station, exhibiting the work of 13 New York-based designers, which concentrates on cork qualities and the capability to adjust to the structure. A sheet of cork arranged as an onion ring acts as a base for this design from which the entire installation has been processed. This will be launched in the permanent collection of the Cork museum located at Fitzgerald Park that houses a collection of some of the memories of Cork's commercial, political, historical, ancient history, old glass, coins and general local memorabilia after the Lisbon Biennal.

The Porcupine installation placed in the Lisbon Altlis Hotel is an adaptable sitting for hotel lobby, restaurant and airport waiting areas. It is finished in natural woolen felt and fiber glass, and imbued from the fractal growth of a shell. Its design has been produced with a parametric logic that allows being remodeled according to the room size.

Cais do Sodré Station is located in central Lisbon on the banks of the River Tagus. It is a transport hub for the Lisbon city bus, subway, taxi, ferry, and tram network. The Altis Park is located approximately three miles from Lisbon International Airport and four miles from Docas.

The Digital Primitive’s Event – Number two, is the second event of a sequence initially presented at the Temporary Museum for New Design held during the Milan Design Week, April 2009, which exhibited a show case of designers and manufactures with working profiles corresponding to the Digital Primitive condition.
