Payette gets accolades for NY university lab design

Published: 22-May-2009

Massachusetts-based architectural design firm, Payette has been honored with three design awards for the design of the Gary C. Comer Geochemistry Building at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) in Palisades, New York.

The 70,000 square feet building includes sophisticated laboratory space for state-of-the-art equipment requiring high tolerance environmental and safety rooms for teaching. The project offers ample opportunity, consistent with the site, for a creative and exciting design which will provide a state-of-the-art research facility.

The Comer Geochemistry Building has received an award for Sustainable Design from the Boston Society of Architects, co-sponsored by the AIA New York Chapter. The architects body recognizes projects that systematically integrate several aspects of sustainability and, as a result, make a substantial impact on the environment.

The project was also named the 2009 Lab of the Year co-sponsored by R&D Magazine and the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA). The Lab of the Year is awarded to projects with an appropriate site, an appealing architecture, and a functional arrangement that encourages innovation and communication between its scientists, engineers, technicians, and staff members.

The project also received a 2009 Merit Award for Excellence in Architecture for a New Building from The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education (AIA-CAE).

The new geochemistry building is part of the LDEO campus in Palisades, New York. LDEO is a major member of the Columbia Earth Institute and is dedicated to understanding how the earth works.

The architects have been successful in making the facility a truly sustainable laboratory in spite of its demanding environmental requirements, says Joe Ienuso, executive vice president of Columbia University Facilities. Payette designed the project in a holistic way giving more importance to sustainability.

The lab complex features a two-story wing of 15 feet high laboratories coupled with a three-story wing of 10 feet high offices. The design demarcated laboratory and office functions and this separation allowed for a highly responsive energy infrastructure along with reducing the building footprint.

The lab portion of the building features a high-energy environment with complex mechanical systems, while the office side is a low-energy structure with modest systems and operable windows.

Payette specializes in the programming, planning, and design of complex buildings for medical and scientific research, academic teaching, healthcare, and corporate research.
