Phase 1 revamp of London Heathrow Airport nearing completion

Published: 20-Feb-2013

The $4 billion phase one renovation project at London Heathrow Airport, which began in 2008, is nearing completion.

Works under the first phase included erecting a new satellite building, demolishing the old Terminal 2 and completing construction on half of new Terminal 2 that can handle around 20 million passengers a year.

The second phase, which will run from 2014-19, will include demolition of Terminal 1 to make way for expansion and completion of Terminal 2. After Terminal 1 is demolished, the expansion will enable it to accommodate almost 30 million passengers a year, according to Businessweek.

Terminal 2 will feature undulating ceilings to maximize height, a streamlined check-in zone with 56 self-service bag drops, and shorter walks to gates giving more time for shopping.

The new Terminal 2 will add extra flight space to allow more flights from Asia and the Middle East, and more retail stores. The terminal will also feature an atrium style departure lounge with a 656 feet walkway.
