An aggregate sum of $110 million has been spent on the renovation of this facility so far. The library renovation project has reached the end of the fifth and final stage. Part of this phase involves renovating and expanding graduate study spaces on the seventh, eighth and ninth floors.

The building is a 1930s construction and had been designed on techniques that were way ahead of its time. The facility which featured a pneumatic tube network and a climate control system, required an upgrade during the late 80s.

Most of the required upgrades were mechanical in nature as all the circuits used were designed in the 30’s and are now obsolete. The upgrades done to the facility include an enhancement of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, as well as installing a new fire safety apparatus, in order to bring it up to the 21st century standards.

Architectural firm Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott also carried out an overhauled book storage in the stacks and started an off-site storage facility which featured the more commonly used books.

In addition to renovations in the stacks, space has been reclaimed in new reading rooms that had previously been used for administrative or cataloguing work.

Plaster ceilings, along with carved woodwork, metal detailing and painted murals were restored during the renovation.
