Rice board of trustees approves Rice Stadium facelift
Published: 20-Dec-2011
The Rice board of trustees has approved a $44.5 million project for construction of a new football facility at the southern portion of Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas and for stadium upgrades.
The new football facility will span over an area of 80,000 square feet and encompass two floors. Among its various features are training and locker rooms, a sports medicine centre and offices dedicated to coaching staff and support personnel along with the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.
The project will also involve creation of eight suites, a plaza space and stadium maintenance work. The existing facility, near the south end will be phased out and substituted with a plaza resembling a park. The present south end concourse will reduce its height to street level to facilitate spectators' entrance into the stadium. The tunnel serving as the team entryway will be retained.
The eight suites will be built on the concourse level in the facility's southeast and southwest ends. Plans also include creation of new restrooms and ticket booths. The seat capacity of 47,000 will be kept intact even after the overhaul.
The project will be financed via private donations. Contributions are also likely to come through naming rights for portions of the facility and plaza.
