Rockingham County's Judicial Centre wins LEED Gold

Published: 19-Jan-2012

The new Judicial Centre in Rockingham County, Wentworth, North Carolina, has secured LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.

The facility was designed by Moseley Architects and developed by Branch & Associates. Its is the first one in Eastern United States to secure the certification and spans 175,400 square feet. The centre features advanced court facilities, and new accommodation for the county's law enforcement departments. It also houses a detention facility with a bed capacity of 300 dedicated to minimum and maximum security detainees.

The building imbibes several green features including high-performance HVAC systems which run low on energy usage. Its lighting fixtures also help in reaping energy cost cuts. The building's roof membrane abides by Energy Star standards and acts as a heat repellent. Use of various energy-efficient measures leads to $94,000 in annual energy savings.

The facility also incorporates rainwater cisterns which save 600,000 gallons of water per year. Use of locally and regionally procured construction materials further contributes to the sustainability factor of the centre.
