Samoo and KMD design sustainable Seongnam City Hall in Korea
Published: 11-Mar-2010
Korean firm Samoo Architects and Engineers, in collaboration with California-based KMD Architects, have designed nine-story Seongnam City Hall featuring a sky wing shape for Seoul’s largest satellite city Seongnam.
The design is representative of a bird landing in the landscape and is intended to appeal to the new generation of Korea’s environmentally conscious citizens. The building’s shell incorporates a number of sustainable elements, including solar panels and sun shading.
The two canopies, with their curved shape, are representative of the wings of the birds landing in the landscape, and contribute to the light and airy nature of the city hall building. The facility is designed to be an open, eco-friendly, and a forward-looking government office.
The sky wing-shaped nine-story building is designed to be a sculpture-like architecture located in the middle of a park. The city hall’s folding and layering facades helps in creating dynamic images.
The lower floor of the city hall offers more public place to citizens, allowing them to interact with the building from all angles. A variety of interior gardens are featured to offer a pleasant working environment.
