San Diego International Airport’s facility gets LEED Gold certification

Published: 18-Mar-2013

The San Diego International Airport’s (SDIA) newly constructed Receiving and Distribution Center (RDC) has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council.

The centre is the first newly built facility at SDIA to meet this level of environmental distinction and is the first LEED Gold-certified receiving and distribution facility in the world.

The RDC, located on the north side of the airfield, provides a central delivery location for food, beverage, retail and other goods used at the airport. It spans over 23,000 square feet.

The airport RDS facility secured the LEED certification for using solar hot water system, recycling construction waste, employing water-efficient plumbing, and reducing delivery truck traffic on Harbor Drive by 50-75 trips per day.

The initiatives adopted by the centre led to diversion of more than 95% of construction waste to landfills via recycling or salvaging efforts and utilising 40% less potable water. Trucks delivering to the terminals are also powered by biodiesel created from recycled cooking oil from SDIA food & beverage operators.
